SYMBOLS CAN ENCAPSULATE PROFOUND EXISTENTIAL TRUTHS.’
Monolithic Reverie is an exploration of the intersection between religion, art and underground electronic music culture.
The cross, as a universal symbol of faith, embodies themes of sacrifice, redemption and the human struggle for meaning, echoing Mircea Eliade's point in The Sacred and the Secular that religious symbols bridge the gap between the sacred and the secular.
The choice of black as a colour evokes introspection and mourning, which resonates with the often sombre and transformative experiences of the underground music scene, which provides a space for expression and solace in the midst of social chaos. This connection to music culture is exemplified in Simon Reynolds' work Energy Flash, in which he discusses how rave culture can provide group transcendence, blurring the lines between spiritual experience and artistic expression.
Underground electronic music often celebrates authenticity and rawness, drawing from natural elements to create immersive experiences. The juxtaposition of organic wood with pulsating electronic soundscapes invites the audience to explore the dichotomy of light and darkness, echoing the duality found in religious narratives and the club scene. As deep bass reverberations and melodic samples intertwine, the installation becomes a sanctuary, creating a space for healing and connection.
In this way, Monolithic Reverie becomes a tribute to the enduring power of faith and a refuge where the rhythms of life and spirituality intersect, celebrating resilience as a conduit for understanding and community in art and music.
